Storm-tossed waves roll off the North Atlantic towards Cornwall, which covers the southwestern tip of the United Kingdom.
Newquay sits on the north coast, famously heralded as the capital of British surfing. Where is Newquay in the UK?
Newquay is in Cornwall, one of the most remote counties in England tucked away in the south-west. This buzzy town sits on the north coast, just 13 miles north of Truro, washed by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
What are the best things to do in Newquay?
In Newquay, life revolves around the beach. There are five to choose from. Fistral Beach is the most famous surf beach, renowned for hosting international competitions. Towan is the closest to town, attracting families and dog walkers alike.
From here, walk along the South West Coast Path to Towan Headland for panoramic views of the town and Newquay Bay.
Back in town, you’ll find a mix of amusement arcades and budget-friendly cafes alongside surf shops and hip boutiques. Stop by Pavilion Cafe for a flat white and cardamom bun before continuing down to Newquay Harbour. In the early morning, you’ll spot swimmers braving the cold water here, often joined by a large resident seal called Sammy. Grab your swimsuit and join them. Come spring, The Boathouse opens up — a mini street food market selling everything from wood-fired pizzas and crispy fish tacos to post-dip coffees.
Traveling with kids? Trenance is home to Newquay Zoo, as well as an enormous trampoline park, playground, and skatepark; plus, Newquay Riding Stables offer horseback excursions along the coast path.
Alternatively, if the weather isn’t playing ball, book a session at Tor Pottery Works — a small pottery studio that regularly hosts workshops for all ages.
