Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth are the epitome of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Their chemistry in the 1995 BBC mini-series Pride and Prejudice was so believable because the two had just as passionate feelings for each other off-camera.

Where was the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice filmed?

Lyme Park & Lyme Hall, Cheshire

Closest stations: New Mills Newton | Middlewood

If you subconsciously get all hot and bothered while visiting Lyme Park, you’re not alone. Lyme Park was Pemberley’s exterior. It’s here at Mr. Darcy's estate in Derbyshire that we see him dripping in his wet white shirt after a dive in the lake.

Sudbury Hall in Sudbury, Derbyshire

Closest station: Tutbury & Hatton

Initially, Lyme Hall was chosen for Pemberley — but problems forced production to only use Lyme Park and Lyme Hall for exterior shots. Sudbury Hall, then, got the nod as Pemberley’s interiors.

Belton House in Grantham, Lincolnshire

Closest station: Grantham

Receiving an invite to Lady Catherine de Bourgh’s Rosings Park estate in Kent is quite the honor. Unlike Lizzie, you don’t need an invitation: just visit the Belton House in Lincolnshire.

Old Rectory at Teigh, Rutland

Closest station: Oakham

Just south of Grantham, the Teigh Old Rectory portrayed another “Rosings Park, Kent” address: Mr. Collins's home, Hunsford Parsonage.

Luckington Court, Wiltshire

Closest station: Yate

Luckington Court got the honor of portraying both the interior and exterior of the Bennet family home, Longbourn, in Pride and Prejudice (1995).

Lacock, Wiltshire

Closest station: Bath

The well-preserved medieval village of Lacock stood-in as Meryton: the fictional “small market town” the Bennet family shops at near Longbourne. You can visit it with a quick cab ride from Bath.

Longnor, Staffordshire Peak District, England

Closest station: Buxton

Longnor in the Staffordshire Peak District was used as the village of Lambton. If you want to visit Bakewell, widely believed to be the inspiration for Austen’s Lambton, it’s only a few miles east of Buxton.

Edgcote House, Northamptonshire

Closest station: Banbury

The lovely 18th-century Edgcote House in Northamptonshire had the privilege of transforming into both the interiors and exteriors of Bingley's Netherfield estate. Well, not all of Netherfield…

Brocket Hall in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire

Closest station: Welwyn Garden City

Brocket Hall in Welwyn Garden City did some of the heavy lifting for Edgcote House by taking on the role of the Netherfield estate ballroom.

🚆 Trainline Trivia: Welwyn Garden City got a heavy focus in another, not-so-romantic film: The World’s End, part of the Cornetto Trilogy together with Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead

Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick, Warwickshire

Closest station: Warwick

The London street scenes were filmed around The Lord Leycester, thanks to its 14th-century timber-framed buildings being less prevalent in present-day London.

Weston-super-Mare, Somerset

Closest station: Weston-super-Mare

Should you feel like eloping as Georgina and Wickham did, head west (not east) of London. The “Ramsgate” in Pride and Prejudice (1995) is actually Weston-super-Mare’s English seaside resort, west of London near Bath and Bristol. The real Ramsgate is east of the UK capital near Dover, Margate, and other seaside towns that make great beach day trips from London.

St Paul's in Deptford, London

Closest station: Deptford

You don’t need to leave London to find this Pride and Prejudice filming location. The 1995 series filmed Wickham's wedding in the Parish Church of Saint Paul in Deptford.

The fictional village of Longbourn, Hertfordshire, serves as the primary setting of Pride and Prejudice. Other fictional places in Hertfordshire include Netherfield Park, the small market town of Meryton, and the Bennet estate.

Is the 1995 or 2005 Pride and Prejudice better?

Comparing the 1995 Pride and Prejudice mini-series to its 2005 film version isn’t a completely fair task. The film gets two hours to tell the story, while the mini-series gets nearly five and a half. The 1995 series stayed more faithful to the novel while the film took a few more liberties with the storytelling and characters.

Where can I watch the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice?

The 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice is currently streaming on Hulu and available to purchase on Amazon Prime. Depending on your age, you may be able to give your mum a call: she might have it on DVD — or even better, ye olde VHS.
