The term Le Frecce refers to the high-speed trains operated by Trenitalia. Le Frecce trains offer a higher standard of service and a greater level of comfort compared to the Intercity and regional trains. Travelling at speeds of up to 300 km/h, Le Frecce services are similar to those known throughout the world as the Shinkansen or bullet trains, found in Japan.
Read on to find everything you need to know about Trenitalia Le Frecce’s main routes, destinations, tickets and onboard services.
There are three types of Trenitalia Frecce trains in operation across Italy. Combined, they provide fast and frequent services to major cities such as Milan, Rome, Genoa, Venice, Naples and Turin.
Frecciarossa are the most well-known high-speed trains operated by Trenitalia and can reach speeds of up to 186 mph (300 km/h). 201 Frecciarossa trains run daily across the country – more than 100 travel between Rome and Milan, 48 between Milan and Venice and 26 between Rome and Venice, 4 of which continue their journey on to Fiumicino Airport.
Frecciargento trains run both on the high-speed and traditional lines at a speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). 48 Frecciargento trains connect Rome to the main cities of northern and southern Italy every day, including Venice, Verona, Bari and Reggio Calabria.
Frecciabianca trains are the slowest Frecce trains – they can reach speeds of up to 124 mph (200 km/h). This type of train travels between Milan and Venice, Genoa and Rome down to Bari and Lecce. 40 Frecciabianca trains run daily from 05:00 to 21:00.
Le Frecce ticket prices may vary based on the fare or class you pick. You can choose between 3 ticket types – Super Economy, Economy and Base – to travel on Le Frecce trains. There are four classes on Frecciarossa trains – Standard, Premium, Business and Executive – and two on Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains – First and Second Class.
Want to buy cheap train tickets in Italy? We recommend booking them at least 28 days in advance. If you already have your travel plans in mind, you can normally get your Trenitalia Frecce tickets six months before your departure (exceptions may apply).
