Trains to Amalfi Coast
The closest you can get to the Amalfi Coast by train is by taking the train to Vietri sul Mare-Amalfi, a train station about 10km to the north-east of Amalfi. However, a combination of trains and buses can get you to the Amalfi Coast without having to worry about renting a car.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast by train
The best way to reach the Amalfi Coast is to take a train to Naples or Salerno train station and then get on one of the local buses that will take you to the main coastal towns. The only town on the Amalfi Coast that has a train station is Vietri sul Mare, but this is at the eastern-most edge of the Amalfi Coast. You can get direct trains to Vietri sul Mare from Naples and Salerno:
- From Naples: go to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi train station, which is an underground station below the mainline station of Napoli Centrale, and take a regional train operated by Trenitalia. 30 trains run every day from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi to Vietri sul Mare, with the first train departing at 05:35 and the last one at 22:07. The journey lasts about 1 hour.
- From Salerno: the train station is located in the historic centre of the city. The journey to Vietri sul Mare takes just 8 minutes. 39 regional trains run daily, with the first train departing from Salerno at 05:00 and the last one at 21:25.
However, Vietri sul Mare is only one of many fascinating spots on the Amalfi Coast. If you want to explore further afield, you'll have to travel by bus.
How to get to Amalfi Coast by bus
Once you get to Napoli Centrale train station, head to Via Ferraris near Piazza Garibaldi, where you can hop on a Sita Sud bus that goes to Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Atrani and finally Amalfi. The total journey lasts about 2 hours.
If you want to travel from Salerno, head to Via Vinciprova, instead, which is 400 metres away from Salerno train station and take a Sita Sud bus to Amalfi – the bus stops are the same. The journey is about 1h 15m. Make sure to grab a window seat on the left side of the bus to get a front row experience of the spectacular view.
To get to Positano, you’ll need to take another Sita Sud bus from Amalfi that stops at Conca dei Marini and Praiano before reaching Positano. The journey lasts about 40 minutes.

Amalfi

Vietri sul Mare
Vietri sul Mare is considered the ceramics capital of Campania. Take a walk around the streets of this beautiful city and admire the tiled shopfronts and grab a piece of ceramic ware while you’re at it. Visit the church of San Giovanni Battista, the symbol of the city, whose dome consists of coloured majolica.
