Thirty miles from London, the town of Stevenage was once a popular pit stop for stagecoaches. In the modern era, it remains a modestly important transport hub, whisking commuters to London Kings Cross in under half an hour and connecting to Doncaster, Leeds and York in the north. The original station of 1850 was north of the town, and its completion was a source of some controversy, sparking fears that the rail line would cripple the thriving stagecoach business – which, unsurprisingly, it eventually did.

Stevenage entered a new phase of development after winning New Town status in the 1940s and gained a pedestrianized town centre – one of Britain’s first – to which the station finally moved in 1973. As well as the shops, check out the nearby Fairlands Valley Park, with its large watersports lake, and Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre, a complex of theatres and fitness facilities just across the road from the station.
