Travel Off-Peak all day, every day, on ScotRail journeys till June 2024
That's right, for the next six months, the Scottish Government are funding a trial to remove Peak fares on all ScotRail journeys. This is to help make fares cheaper, simpler and encourage people to ditch the car and travel by train.
Running from 2nd October 2023 to 28th June 2024, Off-Peak Single and Return tickets will be valid at any time of day, on any day of the week – time restrictions no longer apply.

How to get cheap ScotRail tickets
If you're after cheap UK train tickets, check out the hints below and see how you could bag yourself a bargain. We'll even highlight the cheapest prices!
Book in advance
Train tickets in the UK usually go on sale 3 months before the date of travel. Look out for Advance tickets, as these tend to be cheaper when they're first released. Be quick though, as they sell out on busier routes.

Travel Off-Peak
When travelling by train in the UK, you can benefit from reduced fares by choosing times of day that are less busy. When searching for tickets with us, we'll display all available tickets and options, highlighting the cheapest ones.

Season tickets

Railcards
They're types of train discount cards you can buy for £30 for unlimited use. You can get up to a 1/3 off the price of selected train tickets when using a Railcard. From kids to elderly people, there are great discounts out there to be had.

GroupSave
GroupSave is a concession that allows any group of 3 - 9 passengers travelling together up to a 34% discount on Off-Peak tickets on selected routes.
Great for families and groups of friends, you can find this option in the drop-down menu when booking your train tickets.
Digital tickets are now available on ScotRail routes
You can now enjoy smoother ScotRail journeys with Mobile Tickets. There's no need to queue at the counter or ticket machine at the station, as these digital tickets live in our app, just activate them before your journey and breeze straight through the gates using your phone.

Off-Peak Tickets and Super Off-Peak tickets
Off-Peak tickets are a great way to save money on train travel while retaining an element of flexibility. With an Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak ticket, you benefit from discounted prices and you can travel on any Off-Peak service on your chosen day of travel.
Super Off-Peak Window
Super Off-Peak tickets are only available to Smartcard Holders – unfortunately, we’re still working to integrate Smartcards with our booking system.
ScotRail offer Super Off-Peak tickets as Day Returns only, for travel to/from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The Super Off-Peak window is open from Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 15:00, and after 20:00.
Off-Peak Window
You don’t need a Smartcard to access Off-Peak tickets. Plus, they’re available as Singles and Returns. The Off-Peak window is open from Monday to Friday after 09:15, and all day on weekends.
There are some exceptions to the above: Off-Peak tickets are not available between 16:42 and 18:11 for travel out of Glasgow and Edinburgh. In addition, they’re not available on the following services:
- 18:15 from Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street
- 18:15 from Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh
- 18:30 from Edinburgh to Aberdeen

Whether you're travelling for work, leisure or a bit of both, find a seat to match. ScotRail offers different seating classes to suit all budgets.
First Class
ScotRail offers First Class seating for those wishing to kick back and relax on their journeys. Enjoy comfy seats, quieter coaches and complimentary refreshments. The best thing is, you don’t need to book in advance to get a First Class ticket. Check out our dedicated page to ScotRail First Class for more information.
Standard
Benefit from family-sized tables, power sockets and generous luggage allowances, all at an affordable price. ScotRail makes trips in and around, and to and from Scotland easy for budgeters and thrill-seekers alike.
Taking your bike on ScotRail trains
Planning a day out on your bike? Or cycling as part of your commute to work? You’re in luck. Taking bikes on trains in the UK is completely free.
Although you won't need to reserve a space for your full-sized bike on most ScotRail services, you will for trains on the following routes:
- Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen
- Glasgow, Oban, Fort William and Mallaig
- Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness
- Aberdeen and Inverness
- Inverness, Wick, Thurso and Kyle of Lochalsh
If you’re taking a fold-up bike on board there’s no need for a reservation, but you must be able to carry the bike onto the train and fit it in the luggage rack.

ScotRail trains between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley are the most used passenger service on the whole network, helping to bridge the gap separating these two intensely proud and independent cities.

The West End / Byres Road / Kelvingrove / Shawlands
Two direct trains from Edinburgh to Glasgow run every hour during peak times, giving fast journeys between the two major cities, without the hassle of changing trains at busy times.
Visiting Glasgow is all about culture. You can take in the architecture of Glasgow Cathedral and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Furthermore, you can witness the Old Firm Derby between Rangers and Glasgow Celtic or take a fun trip to the new hip district of the Byres Road.
