Futuristic-looking Roma Termini is the Italian capital’s main train station, and it’s named after the central area of the cosmopolitan capital in which it’s located. This station is packed with handy services, shops, supermarkets and restaurants. Opened in 1860, it has grown to become Italy’s busiest station, with 150 million passengers travelling through every year. From 32 platforms, 850 trains run locally and all over the country each day. This is also where the airport trains terminate, and visitors arriving from Fiumicino Airport can get to the station in just 30 minutes. Milan to Rome by trains takes just under 3 hours, the journey from Florence is as little as 1 hour 20 minutes, whilst travelling from Naples takes 1 hour 10 mins. Travellers will find an array of public transport systems nearby, including the underground, trams, buses and taxis. There are also smaller train stations scattered around the city, including Roma Ostiense and Roma Porta San Pietro (which is the nearest station to the Vatican), among others.
The Leonardo Express is a non-stop service connecting Rome Termini station with Fiumicino Airport. The express train departs every 30 minutes and takes just 32 minutes. You can buy tickets for the Leonardo Express train on Trainline without any additional fee at the price of € 14 one way.
The electronic tickets purchased on Trainline are already validated and must be shown at the exit of the Roma Termini station or Fiumicino Airport station. At Roma Termini, the Leonardo Express train arrives at one of two dedicated platforms, 23 or 24. The first train of the day leaves from Rome Termini at 05:35 (and from then they depart every 30 minutes. For example, at 06:05, 06:35, etc.) while the last train leaves Rome Termini at 22:35 and reaches Fiumicino Airport at 23:07.
Children under 4 years of age and children between 4 and 12 years of age (one child per adult paying) and small animals in an animal’s carry case can travel for free. On the Leonardo Express, you can also bring unlimited luggage of any weight and size. There are large spaces near the doors to accommodate luggage and the trains are also equipped with seats and bathrooms dedicated to people with reduced mobility.
Passengers of the Leonardo Express can access the "Leonardo Express" lounge, which is located between tracks 24 and 25 at Roma Termini station, at a reduced price of € 10 (instead of € 20). The opening hours of the Lounge are from 09:00 to 18:00 from October to April and from 08:00 to 20:00 from May to September. The lounge offers comfortable armchairs, free WiFi and a Skype room, a complimentary selection of snacks, espresso, drinks and afternoon appetizers and an info point where you can get information about visiting Rome and hotel bookings.
Getting to the city centre after arriving at Roma Termini train station is easy because it’s already in the centre! In fact, it’s just a 5-minute walk to the nearest major attraction — Terme di Diocleziano. These baths were the largest in the ancient city and designed to hold 3,000 people at once. From here, a further 10-minute stroll takes visitors to the rather grand Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. Step inside to discover beautiful mosaics adorning the floor and centre aisle. And, just a few hundred metres further on is the impressive semi-circular Piazza della Repubblica, with its large fountain and majestic arcades. On this square, visitors will also find the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, dedicated to Christian martyrs. Culture vultures have their work cut out in this capital, which is filled with treasures like Palazzo Barberini, less than a 10-minute walk away and home to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica. Masterpieces by Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian and many others are displayed inside.
When it comes to grabbing a quick bite, there are restaurants and other eateries at the station. Alternatively, if passengers are looking for something to eat outside the station but still nearby, they should head to Via Magenta, Via Cavour and Via del Viminale. These are all popular areas for food around the station, where travellers can sample some of Italy’s finest cuisine. Choose from the vast range of dishes, including authentic carbonara, pasta with cheese and pepper, lamb chops or maybe the local delicacy of fried artichokes.
