Reviewing Paris to London by train

I arrived at Paris Gare du Nord station one hour before my Eurostar’s departure, as check-in closes 30 minutes before the train leaves. The Eurostar terminal is located on the first floor and can be accessed via an escalator near platform 17. Around the station there are signs for “London check-in upstairs” so there was little chance of getting lost!

Eurostar check-in

There were three border control areas to go through, which took around 15 minutes - first I had to scan the bar code on my ticket (which I printed at home), then pass through a metal detector and finally go through passport control (if you’re an EU citizen ID cards are accepted if you don’t have a passport). Unfortunately, you can’t bring any animals on Eurostar trains.

The train itself

The Standard class seats are wide and comfortable, I was surprised by how much leg room I had. Every seat has a reclining table and a magazine holder – below the armrest there’s a power socket with UK and European pins. Every carriage has dedicated luggage space and overhead storage, with bathrooms in the middle of every other carriage – all with infant changing facilities. Coaches 6 and 13 (or 9 and 16 on some trains) are restaurant carriages where you can find the “Café Metropole” for sandwiches, snacks and beverages. The Café is quite expensive – 3 for an espresso, around 5.50 for a sandwich and a sandwich + soft drink + snack meal deal for 9.80 (November 2017 prices). Because of the train’s speed and numerous curves, I found it a bit challenging to walk up and down the train – it requires some balancing skills!

I’d suggest checking out the site onboard.eurostar.com – you can see a map of where you are, how fast you’re travelling, how long you have left and (a nice touch) what’s around you. For example, through this website, I discovered that the train passes through where the famous Battle of the Somme took place. This onboard website works even if the WiFi signal is weak.

At first sight, entering the Eurotunnel is like entering any other mountain tunnel, but you’ll soon notice a dip in temperature in the carriage. In its deepest part, the tunnel is 75 meters deep (the length of 107 baguettes in a line 🥖) and 50 km long! You won’t pass another train in the tunnel as there are actually two separate tunnels, one for each direction.

Arriving in London

On arrival at London St. Pancras, I was greeted with a final ID/security check before being able to go on my way. The station is well connected with the London Underground network, so I could easily get to any destination in the city if I wanted to!

Traveling from Paris to London by train

I recently took the train from Paris to London with Eurostar, traveling in Standard Class. It took around 2 hours and 20 minutes to get from Paris Gare du Nord to London St Pancras International by train.

What I enjoyed about the journey

Once we set off from London, I was able to sit back and relax, thanks to the comfy seating available in Standard Class. Standard Class cars have pairs of seats, as well as some 2+2 arrangements with a table in the middle. I liked that there was a UK and EU power outlet underneath, so I could charge my devices during the journey. The train was also clean, which made for a pleasant train journey.

I was impressed with the train’s punctuality and the fast journey time – it took less than 2 and a half hours to travel from Paris to the heart of London. Traveling by train means you can travel from city center to city center, without worrying about airport transfers!

What I didn’t like about the journey

Paris Gare du Nord's waiting area was bustling with activity. Due to ongoing construction work, the available space was quite limited, and it was evident that there wasn't enough room for everyone. Passengers bound for three different trains found themselves resorting to sitting on the floor, given the scarcity of seats. The customs procedure was a bit disorderly, primarily because there was no clear demarcation between the French and British customs areas.

Another thing I didn’t like about my trip was the lack of catering in Standard Class. It’s possible to walk through the train to the Eurostar Café (the onboard café-bar) where you can pay for drinks and snacks, but there’s no meal included with a Standard Class ticket. However, in Standard Premier and Business Premier you can have a meal and drinks served at your seat.

Overall, I enjoyed my train trip from Paris to London. The Eurostar train was on time and the journey was fast, so I was in the heart of the UK’s capital in under two and a half hours.

Taking the train from Paris to London

When I traveled from Paris Gare du Nord to London St Pancras International, I took a Eurostar train. I had a Standard Premier ticket. The journey took around 2 hours and 20 minutes.

What I enjoyed about the journey

I was impressed by the very friendly, helpful staff both at the station and on board the train.

In addition, the amenities on the train were good – the seats were very comfortable, and there were UK and EU power outlets available at every seat.

I was also pleased with the food and drink options available on board. In Standard Premier, you can get a light meal served to your seat when traveling to/from London. This is included in the ticket price.

During the journey, I enjoyed watching the French countryside speed by as we left Paris and approached the Channel Tunnel. The journey was fast and we arrived in London around two and a half hours after leaving Paris – right on time!

One top tip for eager travelers: If you arrive early at the station, you won't have to stand in line and will pass very quickly through customs and security. This will leave you time to relax inside the terminal.

What I didn’t like about the journey

One thing I didn’t like about my trip was that there wasn’t any WiFi available on the train. Eurostar trains generally have free WiFi for all passengers, but this didn’t work on my trip.

That said, overall I really enjoyed the journey from Paris to London in Eurostar Standard Premier. The onboard experience was very good, from the helpful staff to the food, and the train was fast and on time.

Paris to London in Standard Premier with Eurostar

Friday night. 6:00 pm. Paris Gare du Nord. All set for a weekend getaway to London!

Arriving at the station, customs and boarding the train

As I live in Paris, I was able to get to Gare du Nord by walking and using public transport. At the station, I headed straight to the second floor – look for the stairs with the colors of the British flag.

After my ticket and passport were checked and I had been through customs with my baggage, I had enough time to look over my plans for the weekend. As I’d arrived in plenty of time at the station (a little over an hour), I definitely had time to relax.

Once boarding opened, I headed toward the correct car, in Standard Premier (Premium Economy). Don’t forget to keep your ticket on you, as a member of Eurostar staff may welcome you and check your ticket before you hop on the train!

Standard Premier on board Eurostar trains

A solo seat in a Eurostar Standard Premier class car

Traveling to London in Standard Premier was a first for me – and it was a successful experience! I got a solo seat, and there was enough legroom and baggage storage space, as well as a power outlet and a USB port. My one minor complaint would be that the onboard WiFi network always has problems – I'd advise you to bring a good book or to download what you what to watch or listen to before you travel.

The power outlet and USB port at a seat in Eurostar Standard Premier

Soon after we left the station, it was time for a meal! Two meal choices were on offer, and I picked a salmon and bulgur wheat salad, with a chocolate tart for dessert! After I’d finished, a member of staff asked whether I wanted a tea or coffee too. By now, I was feeling full, so I put on a good playlist and took a nap (not a problem, as the car was very quiet!).

A meal on board Eurostar Standard Premier. There is a water bottle, apple juice, a salmon salad, a bread roll, a chocolate tart and a hot drink.

After the train had traveled through the Channel Tunnel, we quickly arrived at London St Pancras International station. I got off the train and headed out towards King’s Cross St Pancras tube station to catch a Piccadilly line train, then walked around enjoying the city lights before finally getting to my hotel.
