Gare de Lyon

With its towering belfry, Gare de Lyon train station is located in the 12th arrondissement, just south-east of the city centre. The station serves national and international routes, with 730 trains passing through daily, many of which are high-speed services. As the head of the TGV line, which connects the Rhône-Alpes region and the Mediterranean, the station is linked with Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Spain. Closer to home, the journey from Lyon is less than 2h, and from Marseille it is 3h 10m, while a trip from Aix-en-Provence takes approximately 3h 45m. When arriving at the station, visitors will find the RER A and D, metro lines 1 and 14, as well as RATP buses, to take them anywhere in the city. Those wishing to transfer to Charles-de-Gaulle Airport can use the RER lines during the day, or one of the Noctilien buses if it's after around midnight. This station is one of several serving the capital, including the nearby Gare d'Austerlitz.

Main attractions near Gare de Lyon

Gare de Lyon train station is the ideal gateway to explore the east of the French capital, located at a crossroads for the 4th, 11th and 12th arrondissements. After leaving the main entrance, on Place Louis-Armand, it’s only around a 10-minute walk to find 44-46 Rue de Lyon. Here lies the start of an urban green walk, which runs the length of 6.5 hectares and allows visitors to explore the 12th arrondissement away from traffic. A 10-minute walk along this path will lead to Place de la Bastille. This square was once home to Bastille prison, until its destruction during the French Revolution. Now, a 50-metre monument called the Colonne de Juillet stands to commemorate those events. Surrounding it, visitors will discover a gorgeous garden with sculptures and roses. This area plays host to many concerts and events. And, an array of cafes, bars and concert halls can be found in the northern area.

To experience fine French dining, visitors need not even leave the station! Le Train Bleu is a grand restaurant located in the hall of the Gare de Lyon station. Originally built in 1900, its ornate dining rooms are decorated to represent cities and regions within France. Over 40 famous artists of that time have created paintings to fill the ceilings here. This famous establishment has featured in many films and was declared a historical monument in 1972. Join celebrities like Coco Chanel and Brigitte Bardot by stopping for a bite to eat in this lavish, gilded restaurant, which serves typical French food and wine.
