We believe we must make more environmentally friendly travel choices – with rail offering a greener alternative to air and car travel.
Rail offers travellers a greener alternative to flying or driving, creating 87% less CO2 emissions than air travel and 67% less CO2 emissions compared with car travel, per passenger. It can move millions of people quickly and cleanly, for leisure or business, across countries and continents.
We believe we have a key role to play in supporting the rail industry, businesses and governments in meeting their emissions targets by promoting a modal shift and encouraging greater use of rail and coach.
By removing or reducing some of Europe’s busiest short-haul flight routes, we could eliminate up to 3.5 million tons of CO2 emissions every year.
As well as helping our customers make more sustainable travel choices, we support our teams, who share a passion for protecting the environment, in making greener choices for themselves. Our travel policy encourages our people to choose public transport for longer journeys, otherwise, we make owning a bike more accessible, for completing journeys and shorter trips. Through the Cycle to Work scheme, Trainliners can pay off the cost of their chosen bike and gear over a 12-month period, tax and interest-free.
Our “Green Team”, made up of Trainliners across the business, are committed to reducing the carbon impact of our office spaces, such as minimising the amount of plastic we use and increasing the materials we recycle. We make a conscious effort to make better choices for the environment on a day-to-day basis, including considering environmental credentials when selecting catering, courier services, and office supplies and making the switch to renewable energy contracts.
Trainline has committed to taking urgent action to help limit the rise in global temperatures by becoming one of the first companies in the tech sector to have ambitious science-based net zero targets officially approved.
Trainline’s net zero target commitments have been officially verified by Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with climate science. Trainline commits to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Trainline also commits to near-term target reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions by 55% by 2030.
We have participated in voluntary offsetting since FY2021. For FY23, we have offset our operational greenhouse gas emissions by investing in the Klim Soil Project. Klim soils are the second largest carbon sink in the world and hold more carbon than the atmosphere and all plants combined. Trainline have purchased removal credits to offset the impact of our Scope 1, 2 and select Scope 3 categories: business travel, waste, water and data centre usage. In total, Klim credits contribute to seven Sustainable Development Goals.
