Based on the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone is a two-season Netflix fantasy series, most of which had its fantastical settings shot on a soundstage in Budapest. However, the cast and crew did spend time in Hungary’s capital and surrounding towns to film some of the most iconic set pieces — including the Grand Palace, the Little Palace, and the Royal Archives.

Origo Studios
Closest station: Rákospalota-Kertváros
Many Shadow and Bone filming locations were manufactured at Origo Studios. This production studio, just north of Budapest, has helped create more than 50 shows and films, used as a filming location for Shadow and Bone, Dune, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, Witcher, Blade Runner 2049, Halo, Moon Knight, and more.
Festetics Palace
Closest station: Keszthely
This Baroque-style palace is open for tours should you want to explore the Shadow and Bone filming location for The Little Palace. Keszthely is a great day trip from Budapest for museum hopping and relaxing by Lake Balaton.
Amadé-Bajzáth-Pappenheim Chateau
Closest station: Moha-Rakodó
In the Hungarian village of Iszkaszentgyörgy, just west of Budapest, is Amadé-Bajzáth-Pappenheim Chateau. You’ll know it as the Keramzin orphanage in Shadow and Bone. This Hungarian castle is sadly now closed to the public.
Szentendre Skanzen Village Museum
Closest station: Szentendre
The Szentendre Skanzen Village Museum portrayed West Ravka in Shadow and Bone. On the outskirts of Szentendre, this open-air museum gives a glimpse into Hungarian farming history between the 18th and 20th centuries.

Budapest’s royal palace had the honor of portraying the Grand Palace, the Royal Archives, and the Little Palace in Ravka’s kingdom.
Exchange Palace
Closest station: Kossuth Lajos tér (metro)
Not to be confused with the current Budapest Stock Exchange on the Buda side of the Danube (near Budapest-Déli train station), Exchange Palace is a now unused building in Liberty Square that housed scenes for the Royal Archive.
Royal Palace of Gödöllő

Will there be a Shadow and Bone Season 3 on Netflix?
No, sadly Netflix has officially canceled Shadow and Bone after two seasons. Thankfully, you can still spend time in the Grishaverse if you haven’t read the books. The Shadow and Bone trilogy, Six of Crows duology, The Lives of Saints and The Language of Thorns illustrated folktales and fables, and the King of Scars and Rule of Wolves duology leave plenty more of Grisha to explore.
