The National Railway Museum, unsurprisingly, is just a couple of minutes' walk from York Station and is well-signposted on exiting the station. For a fast and accessible route to the museum, turn left outside the station and walk past the Royal York Hotel. Turn left again on to Leeman Road and walk through the tunnel. Alternatively, you can also access the Museum directly via the footbridge located within the station.
The National Railway Museum is the largest of its kind in the world. It's packed with over 300 years of UK railway history, and comprises two huge exhibition halls where you'll usually find Mallard, Stephenson's Rocket, a Japanese Bullet Train (the only one outside Japan), a Eurostar train and everything in between - plus a number of other spaces, cafes and play areas.
Visit the National Railway Museum's official site for opening information.
More about the National Railway Museum
The museum is home to some of the most iconic, most recognisable trains from across the globe and has something of interest for everyone - even if you're not a railway enthusiast! As part of the Science Museum Group, there are a strong science, engineering and technology themes, but there are fabulous treasures and stories to discover about how our lives in Britain were changed entirely by the creation of the railways.
Beyond the major halls showcasing impressive locomotives and Royal Trains there are several other exhibition spaces including the Warehouse; the whole site is chock-full of railway memorabilia, infrastructure and wonders from the past.
Within the museum is a viewing platform where you can see trains from many of the UK train operating companies including LNER, Grand Central, Northern, and TransPennine Express.
We recommend at least a half-day to explore the site and its glorious contents, and even more if one of your party is a train-mad enthusiast... of any age.
