Napoli Centrale train station

The main departure station in Naples is Napoli Centrale train station, located in the square dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi. Originally built in 1960, the station is currently getting a makeover, but its 23 platforms still serve 390 trains a day. In fact, services carry 50 million passengers every year, on local and national routes, with high-speed trains also available. Direct trains operate to connect Rome and Naples in 1 hour 10 minutes, the journey form Florence is 2 hours 30 minutes, and Salerno to Naples is only a 35-minute journey. Getting around the city is simple because passengers can take buses, trams and taxis from outside the station, which is also directly connected to the subway system (Garibaldi access). Moreover, buses depart every 15 minutes to Capodichino Airport, with an approximate 20-minute journey time. Other train stations in the city include Napoli Mergellina, an impressive Art Deco building, and Napoli Campi Flegrei.

Main attractions near Napoli Centrale train station

When leaving Napoli Centrale train station, a 20-minute walk or a 10-minute tram ride will take visitors to the spectacular Duomo di Napoli, which is just under 1.5 km away from the station. One of the largest and most important churches in the city, it’s been changed and added to over the years, leaving a mix of styles. A further 10-minute walk away is the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. It is home to many Greek and Roman treasures, as well as relics from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, revealing the city’s eclectic past. A further 10-minute stroll along Via Santa Maria di Costantinopoli leads to the Cappella Sansevero. Holding the works of some of Italy's leading artists from the 18th century, it is home to the famed Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sammartino. Saluzzo Palazzo Corigliano is located just behind this chapel, in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. It’s now a university building, but visitors can admire a beautiful gallery inside, decorated with frescoes on the ceiling and walls.

It would be a crime against good cuisine to leave Naples without sampling some of the city’s most famous food! Being known all across the world for pizza definitely puts this dish on the menu. Some of the very best the city has to offer can be found in Via Giovanni Nicotera, Vico Lungo del Gelso, and Via Speranzella. Anyone who is not a fan of pizza should sample the seafood dish, spaghetti alle vongole (with clams). When it comes to dessert, tourists should try out the baba pastiera (wheat cake) or the sfogliatella (filled pastry).
