The grand Scottish Baronial station buildings at Morpeth date back to the opening of the Newcastle and Berwick railway in 1847. The arrival of the railway was crucial for linking the town not only with Newcastle, but with Scotland as well – today the station is served by trains to London and Edinburgh, by local services to Newcastle Central and the MetroCentre, and by cross-country services to Penzance via Leeds. Morpeth station is half a mile south of the town centre, and the walk north takes you across the River Wansbeck and past the Morpeth Chantry, a 13th century building that now houses the tourist information centre and the Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum. From here Bridge Street marks the start of the main shopping area in the town, leading down to Oldgate and New Market, where there are a number of restaurants, pubs, banks and other services.

Station details & facilities

The historic station buildings house the ticket counter, toilets and a taxi office, and lead onto platform 1 (towards Newcastle and London). Northbound trains, including those to Edinburgh, depart from platform 2, which can be reached via a subway. There is a lift for step-free access to both platforms. The closest bus stop for onward connections, including into the town centre, is on Shields Road at Mafeking roundabout.

Since 25th October 2021, a brand-new train operator called Lumo has been running between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh via the East Coast Main Line, calling at Stevenage, Newcastle and Morpeth. Learn more about Lumo trains.
