Two separate railway stations came together to make London Victoria – and if you look closely, you can tell from the building's architecture. On one side is the grey stone of the former South Eastern and Chatham Railway station, and on the other the red-brick Renaissance-style building once known as the Brighton Station. The creation of the Southern Railway linked the two companies and their buildings in 1923, creating the bustling terminal that trains arrive at today. Rarely quiet, Victoria is the arrival point for trains from Kent, the south coast and many of London's southern suburbs, as well as for the Gatwick Express.
For tourists, its location takes some beating: a fifteen minute walk takes you to Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the top-end shopping around Sloane Square. London Victoria is close to the Victoria and Albert Museum and is also well-connected for onward travel, with Circle, District and Victoria underground lines and the Victoria Coach Station nearby.
London Victoria is one of the major London terminals, serving passengers in the south-east of England. There are three train companies that operate out of Victoria: Southeastern, Southern and Gatwick Express. Southeastern trains take passengers primarily into the Kent region, with trains travelling each day to Ashford International, Gillingham and Dover Priory.
With over 70 million passengers arriving or departing from London Victoria each year, it can get extremely busy. Most platforms lead off of the main concourse, and they fall into four groups: platforms 1-7 (towards Kent) are on the left-hand side of the concourse; 8-12 (towards southeast London) are in the middle; 13-14 (Gatwick Express) are also in the middle; and 15-19 (towards the south coast) are down a short corridor on the right of the concourse.
London Victoria station is open every day that services are running to and from the station. The station usually opens just before the first train of the day leaves and then closes after the last train departs. Ticket office opening hours may vary.
