London Paddington is one of Britain's most beloved and important railway stations. The historic headquarters of the Great Western Railway, the original building was designed by GWR chief engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and there is a statue of the great man between platforms 8 and 9. Paddington's first train station opened on Bishop's Bridge Road in 1838, but the Brunel-built station opened in 1854 - and the surviving wrought iron roofs that stretch across the platforms are a marvel to this day. Paddington provides services to and from the West Country and South Wales and to the suburban areas of West London and the Thames Valley. The station is situated in the middle of many tourist attractions, including the vast greenery of Hyde Park, the charming Regent's Canal, Kensington Palace and art hub The Serpentine. Since the 1960s, Paddington station has been known as the home of everybody's favourite cuddly toy, Paddington Bear, and you'll find a bronze statue of Paddington Bear under the clock on platform 1.
