Liverpool Street station is the terminus for trains into London from the east of England and Stansted Airport. The station was built in 1874 by the Great Eastern Railway (GER) but was heavily damaged during WW1 by three bombs, which killed 162 people. Over 1,000 GER employees were killed during WW1 and are commemorated by a large marble memorial in the booking hall. Liverpool Street was also the arrival point of thousands of Jewish children as part of the Kindertransport rescue in the late 1930s, an event memorialised by a bronze sculpture by the station entrance. In 1993, London Liverpool Street was twinned with Amsterdam Centraal, marking the station at either end of the Duthflyer rail-ferry service that used to run via Harwich.

To the south of the station is the City of London, and it is a short walk to the Bank of England and the 30 St Mary Axe skyscraper, designed by Norman Foster and better known as The Gherkin. Liverpool Street station is also close to Spitalfields Market, the art galleries of Whitechapel, and the bars and cafes of Shoreditch.
