Who is iryo?
iryo is the new brand from railway operator ILSA, which began operating services in Spain on the 25th of November 2022. Unlike their competitors (AVE, Avlo, and OUIGO Spain), iryo trains offer a premium service on board. These new trains take 2 hours and 30 minutes to travel between Madrid and Barcelona. They depart from Madrid Atocha and Barcelona Sants stations, and stop in Zaragoza along the way.
iryo’s services connect Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona. There are also services that run between Madrid, Cuenca, and Valencia or Alicante, as well as between Madrid, Córdoba, Seville and Málaga (as of 31st March 2023).
Here’s what you need to know about the new iryo services:
- There are 32 daily trains between Madrid and Barcelona (16 each way)
- 4 Classes are available on board: Infinita Bistró, Singular Only YOU, Singular and Inicial
- A restaurant service and free WiFi are available on board
- iryo trains are the latest-generation Hitachi-Alstom trains
- They’re high-speed trains, reaching speeds of up to 223 mph (360 km/h)
- You can get a Combinado Cercanías ticket with a long-distance iryo ticket

iryo trains: Frecciarossa 1000
iryo's new Frecciarossa trains are modern, can reach speeds of 223 mph (360 km/h), and are known for their use of state-of-the-art eco-friendly technology.
These modern trains stand out for their comfort, speed, and minimal environmental impact. There's no need to fly between cities – just book your tickets, jump on board and relax as you take in the scenery as it whisks past your window.
iryo’s Frecciarossa trains have different classes, all of which come with free unlimited WiFi, power sockets, toilets and an onboard entertainment portal where you can watch films and TV series. These classes are:

iryo Infinita Bistró
You can now choose the new Infinita Bistró option when buying a train ticket with iryo. When you go to buy your ticket, click on First Class, then choose ‘Infinita Bistró’: you’ll be served an excellent meal made with seasonal products. Travel in comfort and enjoy five-star food and drink!
Bear in mind that some of iryo’s menu choices may contain nuts or other allergens, so if you have any allergies, make sure to check the ingredients before you reserve your Infinita Bistró meal.

With this, you can travel stress-free, knowing that the price includes free date changes, changes if you miss your train, and free seat selection. There are three types of train tickets available across the majority of Spain’s rail network – ‘Básico’, ‘Elige’ and ‘Prémium’. When travelling on Renfe or AVE trains, you should try and book a ‘Básico’ ticket as far in advance as possible, as this will be your cheapest option! Once you buy your train ticket with us you will receive a confirmation email with the details of your trip and ticket as a PDF. You can choose to print your ticket before you travel but showing your eTicket on a smart device is perfectly normal in Spain.

Madrid Atocha
Madrid Atocha is the busiest station in Spain and one of the top ten busiest stations in Europe.
Complete with a tropical garden in the old train shed, Madrid Atocha (officially Madrid Puerta de Atocha) is an attraction itself. There are 24 platforms in total, with 15 high-speed platforms (for AVE and OUIGO trains). As well as high-speed connections, you can catch Cercanías suburban rail services from the platforms below ground. These platforms are technically part of a separate station, Madrid Atocha-Cercanías, but in principle, they are part of Atocha station.

Barcelona Sants station
Barcelona Sants is one of Renfe’s main stations, connecting the Catalonian capital to the rest of Spain and parts of France.
Owned by ADIF, Barcelona Sants station is the second-busiest station in Spain after Madrid Atocha – seeing over 43 million passengers pass through its gates in 2017. The station is located in Barcelona’s Sants neighbourhood, after which it is named.
There are 14 platforms located beneath street level. Platforms 1-6 are for high-speed trains, such as AVE, TGV, and OUIGO services. Platforms 7-14 are for Rodiales suburban rail services and medium-distance Talgo and Euromed trains.

Zaragoza Delicias
Zaragoza train station (also called Zaragoza-Delicias) opened in 2003, followed by a new bus station in 2007. The large contemporary building features a sleek design with futuristic and artistic elements. Located in the northwest of the city, the station is one of the busiest in Spain.

Valencia Joaquín Sorolla
Valencia Joaquín Sorolla train station is a modern railway complex located in the city centre, with good transport connections to the whole of Valencia. It was built specifically to connect the capital of Turia via the Long Distance and High-Speed AVE train services to Madrid (it takes just over 1 hour 30 minutes) or Seville (it takes about 4 hours).
