Gatwick Airport Station is situated at the South Terminal and is also easily accessible via a free shuttle from the North Terminal. The station was originally constructed in 1891 for the purpose of carrying passengers to Gatwick Racecourse. Racing ceased in 1940 at the beginning of WW2 and was never restarted. During the early 1950s the nearby Tinsley Green airport expanded and acquired the former racecourse and in 1958 the rebuilt station was opened and given its present name. A £53 million redevelopment, completed in 2014, produced considerable improvements in the station and provided a host of benefits to passengers flying in or out of the airport and requiring on-going trains to and from Gatwick Airport.
