Frankfurt am Main train station showcases a beautiful mixture of neo-Renaissance and neo-classical styles, and it is the biggest train station in Germany. Every day 450,000 passengers zip through on long-distance, regional, and high-speed routes, and there are networks serving the city and wider region here too. With numerous direct trains arriving from other major German destinations, as well as European cities across the borders, it is hardly surprising that Frankfurt am Main train station is one of Germany’s most important traffic hubs. Travelling direct from Berlin takes 3h42mins, while journeys from Dusseldorf and Cologne take just 1h22mins and 1h06mins respectively. Passengers can even travel direct from Amsterdam in a speedy 3h54mins, and from Brussels in 2h57mins. Arrivals at the station can head into the city on the U-Bahn, or into the suburbs on the S-Bahn. Frankfurt’s other large station, Frankfurt am Main Flughafen Fernbahnhof, is mostly served by long-distance lines and the ICE high-speed railway.

Strolling south from the station and across the River Main, art lovers will be able to wander between Frankfurt’s riverside galleries and museums, traversing centuries of art with just a few steps between each era. A 15-minute walk will bring visitors to Giersch der Goethe-Universität. This museum showcases works by local artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. A further 2-minute walk away, along the river, the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung presents an incredible display of sculptures. The museum itself is an enchanting setting, comprised of gorgeous gardens and a turreted 19th-century villa.

When heading into the city from Frankfurt am Main train station, passengers would be silly not to stop off at Main Tower — a huge glass skyscraper. From the top, unhindered panoramic views of the city await. For the more quintessentially German, half-timbered houses, travellers need to head towards the old town centre. Here, about a 15-minute walk from the station, they will find gorgeous architecture, which looks good enough to eat! The Standesamt Frankfurt am Main, for example, looks as though it is made from chocolate bourbons. Or, a few steps away, the Alte Nikolaikirche, appears as though it is made out of gingerbread. If visitors are peckish upon arrival, they won’t have to go far before they reach a selection of excellent eateries. The Bahnhofsviertel district of Frankfurt, where the station is located, is home to a whole host of fabulous establishments serving international cuisine.
