A day trip from Florence to Pisa traveling on a Trenitalia Intercity train

Whilst staying in Florence as part of a family trip around Italy by train, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was a must see! We planned a morning trip to Pisa from Florence and booked our tickets in advance, so we didn’t have to get up extra early to buy our tickets from the station.

Getting to Florence Santa Maria Novella station

As it was early, we decided to hop on a bus that stopped by the station. We bought the tickets from a local shop beforehand. Once at the station, big screens showing all the upcoming departures made it easy to find our platform, and we grabbed a coffee from one of the cafes before showing our tickets to the inspectors and jumping on the double decker Intercity train.

Traveler tip: another benefit of buying a digital ticket over a paper one for this trip was that we didn’t need to validate our tickets in a machine on the platform before boarding the team – quite a few other tourists with paper tickets forgot to do this and could have been fined €60 each!

On board the Intercity train

It felt like a real novelty going on a double decker train as we don’t have them in the UK, so naturally we went to find seats on the top deck. There were no seat reservations, so we were free to sit wherever there was a free space. There were leather seats in rows of two or groups of four, with small bins at the end of each row to put any rubbish. The rows of two had fold down tables but the groups of four only had a small ledge by the window.

Trenitalia Intercity interior leather seats

I liked how there were screens showing upcoming stops and times, so we knew how much further we had to go, and the announcements were in Italian and English which was very helpful!

Arriving at Pisa Centrale station and heading to the Leaning Tower

We arrived on time into Pisa Centrale station and headed straight to one of the shops in the station to buy a local bus ticket. It’s a 25-minute walk from the station to the Leaning Tower, but as we wanted to get back to Florence by the early afternoon, we opted for the 15-minute bus ride. It was €1.50 for a one-way ticket, valid for 70 minutes after we bought it. The bus dropped us off right by the entrance, so we had plenty of time to wander around the complex and take classic tourist photos of the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa!

Leaning Tower of Pisa

If you have the time, Pisa is definitely worth a trip from Florence, and the train was a quick and comfortable way of getting there.

Jorja, a Trainline employee, chose to share their experience of the journey between Florence and Pisa Centrale.
