What is CartaFRECCIA by Trenitalia?

CartaFRECCIA is Trenitalia’s free loyalty program which allows you to collect points when you travel (or when you buy products and services from the train company’s partners) and access discounts and reward tickets.

With CartaFRECCIA:

  • For every euro spent on Frecce trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains), Eurocity and Euronight trains (Italian routes only), you’ll earn 1 CartaFRECCIA point.

How do I accumulate CartaFRECCIA points?

Earn CartaFRECCIA points

Enter your personal code for every purchase. The higher the value of the ticket you buy, the more points will be credited to your account. Remember, only journeys made by the cardholder will be eligible for accumulating points.

Things to know:

  • For every euro spent on Frecce, Eurocity or Euronight trains (on Italian routes only), earn 1 CartaFRECCIA point. Points help you earn CartaFRECCIA Argento, Oro or Platino status.
  • When buying 2nd Class/Standard Class season tickets, you will earn reward points, but these do not count towards CartaFRECCIA status levels.
  • For each ticket for a journey on a Frecciarossa, Frecciargento or Frecciabianca train, you’ll earn 1 green point for every 10km. Saving CO2 does turn into points!

Get Green Points

Green Points are additional loyalty points that Trenitalia gives to customers according to how many kilometers they’ve traveled by train, as a reward for having chosen the train over a more polluting form of transport.

Things to know:

  • For each ticket bought for a journey on a Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca or Eurocity train when you register your CartaFRECCIA, you don’t just earn standard Loyalty Points, but Trenitalia will also credit your account with Green Points. The train company recognizes and rewards your contribution to the environment.
  • Remember that Green Points do not count towards CartaFRECCIA status levels.
  • Extra points are awarded based on how much CO2 you’ve saved. This is worked out in relation to how many kilometers you’ve traveled: you’ll earn 1 point per 10 km.

Green Points are accumulated from traveling on Frecce trains and are then added to points earned by other means according to the regulations.

Accumulate points with an AV subscription

If you buy a monthly Alta Velocità or AV (high-speed) pass but you don’t travel every day, Trenitalia will still give you points!

Things to know:

  • You’ll get 10 extra CartaFRECCIA points for each booking that you canceled or did not use (you can cancel bookings at the ticket office or by contacting the call center for ticketless journeys).
  • The extra points will be credited to your account within 10 days of the end of the subscription’s validity period.
  • This promotion cannot be used in conjunction with other promotions for accumulating points.
  • Subscriptions also allow you to collect Green Points, which accumulate at a flat rate (for example, for 6-day subscriptions, points are calculated per 3 km; for 10-day carnets, points are calculated per 10 km; for fortnightly subscriptions, kilometers traveled are multiplied by 5).

How to use CartaFRECCIA points

Spend your points as you want: grab a reward ticket, get a pack (or carnet) of 10 tickets, transfer points or upgrade your ticket.

If you frequently travel on the same route served by Frecce trains, then a 10-journey carnet could be the reward for you! This is a nominative reward, and reservations can be used only by the carnet holder.

The carnet allows you to make 10 journeys which should be booked within 180 days for train trips on the same route.

Here’s how many CartaFRECCIA points you’ll need:

Trenitalia gives you the option to transfer and receive CartaFRECCIA points to/from other CartaFRECCIA cardholders.

Generally, you can:

  • Make 3 transfers (in multiples of 500 points each, up to a maximum of 1,500 points)
  • Receive a maximum of 1,500 points in 3 transfers (500 points per transfer).

The number of transfers you are allowed, however, increases according to your status level:

  • CartaFRECCIA Argento gives you the right to 4 transfers (both in and out)
  • CartaFRECCIA Oro lets you make 5 transfers (both in and out)
  • CartaFRECCIA Platino allows you to make 6 transfers (both in and out).

Upgrade with CartaFRECCIA

CartaFRECCIA quickly gives you a free reward upgrade: choose maximum comfort! You can, in fact, transform a Standard ticket into a Business ticket, a Second Class ticket into a First Class ticket, or a Business ticket into an Executive ticket. Here are the details:

  • Freccia Upgrade to 1st Class: turn a Second Class ticket into a First Class ticket
  • Frecciarossa Business Upgrade: turn a Standard ticket into a Business ticket
  • Frecciarossa Executive Upgrade: turn a Business ticket into an Executive ticket.

You can use this reward if you’ve purchased a Base ticket in Second Class, Standard Class or Business Class, for one person, on one route, on one train. The upgrade cannot be used on journeys with transfers.

In addition, according to your CartaFRECCIA status, you may be able to upgrade more often:

  • CartaFRECCIA: 1 upgrade
  • CartaFRECCIA Argento: 2 upgrades
  • CartaFRECCIA Oro: 3 upgrades
  • CartaFRECCIA Platino: 4 upgrades

You can also decide to use your points to buy an upgrade:

  • 500 points – Upgrade from Second Class to First Class on Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains
  • 500 points – Upgrade from Standard to Frecciarossa Business
  • 1000 points – Upgrade from Business to Frecciarossa Executive

Can my CartaFRECCIA expire?

Your CartaFRECCIA won’t expire, but your points can.

Remember that:

  • Unused points will not be refunded. Once the points for the current collection period expire, they will not be available to redeem for rewards, even if they remain visible in your account.
  • You do not need to request a new card or code when a new collection period starts. You can always use the same card.
  • To request rewards, you only need your CartaFRECCIA number. If you’ve lost your card, you can contact the call center on 89 20 21 (Italian phone number, fees may apply).

Recovering CartaFRECCIA points

To collect points when booking with Trainline, you must always provide your CartaFRECCIA number and make sure that your ticket displays the code indicated on your card. Generally, it’s not possible to collect points after buying your tickets.

In some cases, after purchase it is only possible to retrieve points for Frecce tickets which bear the first and last name of the traveler whose CartaFRECCIA code was omitted during purchase. You can recover points from these tickets on the dedicated area on the Trenitalia website within 30 days of purchase. Recovery of these points is only possible if the first and last name on the ticket are identical to those displayed on the CartaFRECCIA.
