Burnham station lies in rural Berkshire, one mile south of the village of Burnham itself, in the small village of Haymill. The station runs regular services between Reading and London Paddington, with additional services in peak times to Henley. Built in 1899, the station was originally known as Burnham Beeches, before becoming Burnham (Bucks) in 1930, and then finally, simply, Burnham in 1975. Today the station is very popular with commuters and is the closest station to the busy Slough trading estate, made famous by the BBC sitcom, The Office. Burnham was once a highly important village, lying in a prime location on the old A4 from London to Bath. Such was its importance that it received a Royal Charter to hold a prestigious market and annual fair. However, when a new bridge was built across the Thames, the A4 was moved away from Burnham, taking the market and fair with it. Today, the sleepy village is home to a small high street, comprising several shops, pubs and restaurants.
Burnham station is accessible from both Sandringham Court and Station Road. A subway at the main entrance leads to the middle of the main station island between platform 1 on the left, with its services to Reading, and platform 2 to the right, for services toward London Paddington. A small ticket office is between the two platforms, housing a waiting room, toilet facilities and staffed ticket desk.
