Trenitalia Base Tickets are the standard full-price tickets and they're available from six months before to the same day of departure.
Trenitalia Base tickets are available to travel on national Trenitalia trains including the high-speed services and Intercity services. The Base fare is the "reference" price to which price reductions and increases are applied on some high-speed trains (Frecciarossa and Frecciargento).
Trenitalia Base tickets are often preferred by tourists and visitors to Italy because they guarantee great flexibility and are relatively cheaper than other similar services in Europe. With Trenitalia Base tickets you can travel on some of the most popular high-speed routes such as Rome to Florence in just over an hour and Rome to Venice in three and a half hours.
You can use Trenitalia Base tickets to travel on all Trenitalia domestic long-distance trains, including the high-speed services Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca and the Intercity day and night services.
If you plan on taking a regional train instead, you'll need to get another type of ticket with a fare type called Ordinaria.

Good to know – if you're taking a train at the main stations of Milan, Rome, Naples or Florence you'll have to show your paperless ticket before boarding the train. In all other cases, you can board the train and then show your paperless ticket when asked to by the ticket inspector.
If you need to modify or refund a Base fare ticket, you can do so online in your Trainline account or at the Trenitalia ticket counters that can be found in most train stations in Italy. It's free to change the date and time of travelling (and you can do so an unlimited amount of times) but if you ask for a refund, Trenitalia will withhold 20% of the ticket price.
